spacerObjectives and Outcomes

Erik’s Ranch is unique compared to other agrarian group homes because it relies on a life-long learning philosophy and is innovative in creating partnerships that encourage skill, hobby and career building for our residents. Our strength and innovation lie in key objectives: (1) match the environment and the resident’s strengths, abilities and desires, and (2) increase skills, enabling independence and participation in the community and (3) provide surroundings that encourage family and community participation.

Essentially, we want to offer the same kinds of living, work and lifestyle options and opportunities for adults with autism that most of us simply take for granted.

Leisure

Erik’s Ranch is designed to provide a high quality lifestyle for our residents and day programming guests. Activities at Erik’s Ranch are family resort activities in which one might participate while on vacation or at leisure. Therefore family and community participation will occur at a higher rate than in most other group home models. Since a high percentage of the autistic population struggles with communication, these activities encourage wonderful connections with loved ones, as people of all ages can participate meaningfully in a positive and enjoyable way without relying on significant verbal interaction.

Employment

Employment opportunities on-and off–site will bring the Ranch and community together in broad and varied ways. Local artists, gardeners, and animal handlers work side by side with the residents. Residents with the desire and skills to become an artist are mentored by local artists to create, display and sell their artwork. Staff in the on-site horse stable mentor those interested in the care of large animals. Dog and cat groomers share their expertise with the residents and help them to develop skills to maintain small animals. Gardeners and landscape architects help residents learn to manage the plants and surrounding landscapes.

Overall, employment for residents at Erik’s Ranch is a departure from typical offerings for those with autism (collating, shredding, piece-work). Instead, our jobs include: Personal Concierge, Sous Chef, Historian, Environmental Researcher, Gardener, Tour Guide, Equestrian Groom, Grounds Maintenance, Animal Care Assistant, Artist in Residence and Event Planner.
